📖 Exodus2:4
Miriam, a brave young girl with wide, anxious eyes, carefully nestled her baby brother, Moses, into a watertight papyrus basket. Her heart ached as she sealed the last reed, a silent prayer escaping her lips as she gently pushed the tiny vessel into the slow-moving Nile, watching it drift away from the reeds near their home. The moonlight shimmered on the water, turning the river into a silver path for the tiny ark.
Ducking low amongst the tall, whispering reeds, Miriam's small frame was almost invisible. Her gaze, however, was fixed on the bobbing basket, a fragile speck against the vast river. She crept along the muddy bank, keeping pace with the drifting craft, her bare feet silent, her breath held tight. Every rustle, every splash, made her jump, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs.
A sudden, dark ripple broke the water’s surface. Miriam gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. A large, green crocodile, with a surprisingly friendly, cartoonish grin, surfaced near the basket, its curious eyes fixed on the bundle. Miriam’s heart hammered; she wanted to cry out, but instinct told her to remain hidden, her body frozen in fear and hope.
Just as the crocodile nudged the basket, a kaleidoscope of vibrant, jewel-toned birds, chirping merrily, descended from the sky. They flapped and twirled around the reptile's snout, playfully distracting it with their dazzling aerial display. The crocodile, momentarily charmed by the lively spectacle, veered away, chasing the birds upstream, leaving the basket safe. Miriam let out a shaky breath of relief, a silent prayer of thanks escaping her lips.
Further downstream, a regal procession of Egyptian women, adorned in beautiful silks, approached the river for their morning bath. Miriam watched, her chest tight with a mix of fear and hope, as the Pharaoh's daughter spotted the strange basket caught in the lilies. A servant retrieved it, and the princess peered inside, her expression softening into one of tender wonder at the sight of the crying infant.
Summoning courage she didn't know she possessed, Miriam emerged from the reeds, her small shadow stretching across the sandy bank. She approached the princess, her voice trembling but clear. "My lady," she began, pointing to the crying infant, "shall I find a Hebrew woman to nurse the baby for you?" The princess, touched by Miriam's boldness and the baby's plight, smiled and nodded, her eyes twinkling with approval.
Joy bubbled in Miriam's chest as she raced back to her mother, explaining everything with breathless excitement. Soon, Miriam stood proudly beside her mother as the princess entrusted baby Moses back into his own mother's arms, ensuring his safety and his mother’s comfort. Miriam gazed at her brother, a secret smile playing on her lips, knowing she had played a vital part in God's great plan, a tiny guardian to a future leader.Miriam’s brave watch reminded her that even the smallest act of courage, born of love and faith, can set great plans in motion. God always watches over His children, often through unexpected means. "Then his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him." Exodus 2:4.
